Randy > ~ The Lower Lewis River~

This area is a photographer's dream for waterfalls. All three area's. The upper Falls, middle Falls, and the lower Falls are a cornucopia of opportunities. This was taken in the early morning as the mist was slowly disappearing. A magical place!

The lower Lewis River in late October

The rocks were very slippery, with wet leaves up and down the river. My wife slipped and took a nasy fall near this edge. My heart just about stopped, until I realized she wasn't injured, aside from a large bruise on her her thigh, and more importantly, she didn't slip into the river.

This a an interesting part of the Lower Lewis River. Most of the time the water level is too high to view this. The shapes of the layered rocks as well as the different colors grabbed my attention.

"The name, Sol Duc, is an Indian term meaning "sparkling water."
Randy > ~A Grand Entrance ~

Oneonta Gorge Entrance is a deep, narrow cleft in the basalt bluff through which flows a foaming creek. Fossilized trees caught by a lava flow, are entombed in its perpendicular walls.

My wife and I camped at a nearby campground to get up early, hoping the quality of the early morning light would be perfect, as it quickly becomes too harsh.. This image required some wading in cold water and climbing over a few logs. I had my shorts and tennis shoes on, wondering if this opportunity was going to be worth freezing my feet off.

I reached a good perspective with the canyon walls almost touching. I shot a few frames and scrambled back to the van as fast as I could. After we returned to our campsite, my cup of coffee never tasted so good!
Randy > ~Lewis River~

I tried to capture just the braided streams flowing into the Lewis river. I converted this into a black- and- white image, as I liked the contrast between the dark rocks and the white water.

A black-and- white image forces both the photographer and the viewer to work harder to see and appreciate the image. Sometimes, but not always, color can distract.
Randy > ~Lower Lewis River~

Of all the images I made on my October 2010 trip to the Lewis River, I think this one is my favorite. I always try to capture as many perspectives as I can. The moss-covered rock formations, as well as the few Maple leaves clinging to the tree, tie all the elements together.

When the next storm arrives, this area will probably be wearing a blanket of snow.

Randy > ~ Horsetail Falls ~

A portion of Horsetail Falls framed between the trees. I'm always looking to try different compositions. I've visited the Columbia River Gorge many times, however I liked this composition the best from a day of shooting.
